Letter to Our Fairview Families
Dear Fairview Families,
Welcome to our annual Read-A-Thon! The Read-A-Thon (RAT) is an opportunity for students to keep track of their reading (or being read to) in order to reach personal goals, earn personal recognition, classroom recognition, school-wide pride, and to raise money for our school by signing up sponsors who also value reading. All funds from the RAT directly serve our students’ educational experiences.
During our Read-A-Thon each student should read as much as possible (homework reading plus more!). Students are asked to set goals for themselves and see if they can reach them. Each student who works to meet his/her goal will be entered in a raffle. Classrooms also set goals. Fairview’s goal is to read over 200,000 minutes in 7 days! Students and classrooms will be recognized for their efforts (see Recognition attached).
This year’s student council wants our school to increase global literacy (Connecting Communities One Book at a Time). Fairview is teaming up with American Mortgage Service Co. and Cooperative for Education to impact reading education in Guatemala. If our school can raise $20,000 during this Read-A-Thon, Cooperative for Education can benefit with a corporate match of $2,000 from American Mortgage Services, Co. This match would support the Culture of Reading Program that provides engaging storybooks, teacher training, and literacy coaching for a Guatemalan primary school in need. We know that reading opens up the world to our students and our students want to spread the joy of reading with the world.
In addition, this year the RAT culminates with our library’s Scholastic Book Fair, Jan 22-26. Over the course of the event, students will be exposed to new authors, genres, and texts and have ‘in-school’ access to purchase the reading materials that have caught their interest. 55% of sales support our school library. Join us as we enhance literacy through funds and fun.
Raising money for our school is an important part of the Read-A-Thon. All collections will support Fairview. To boost participation, share how American Mortgage Services, Co. will match up to 10% of our efforts to support reading education in Guatemala. For every $10 raised by Fairview students, AMS will give $1 to Cooperative for Education. Please sign up reading sponsors from among your family, friends, and co- workers. Please do not allow your students to ask strangers. Sponsors should pledge a flat rate to help support students reading goals. Please see the Sponsorship Form and Reading Record Sheet for further details. https://mkt.com/gebas-fairview-pto
